Ron S.

New York, NY
LPN; Emergency Room

I’m a nurse because I like the challenges and rewards of helping others in need. When I was younger, my father had cancer, and I admired the nurses who took care of him and helped him through it. I was truly inspired by the care that was given to him. Working in the ER is very exciting because you never know what’s going to happen each day. When a patient comes into the ER, it’s a full team effort. We all jump in and do what we can, and that creates a good deal of pressure and excitement — it’s like there’s a charge in the air. The best thing I can do for my patients is to let them know that I’m there to help them. I do my best to calm them by staying and talking with them when they’re scared, and I feel that makes a great difference in people’s lives. Every day in nursing is a new challenge because there’s always a new patient with new problems. No other job could give me the kind of satisfaction I feel with nursing. It’s not just a job for me; it’s what I was meant to do.
