Takako B.
Honolulu, HI
RN; Combined Intensive Care
While I was majoring in electrical engineering in college I was also volunteering at a hospital helping difficult to place foster care children. I really wasn’t looking forward to the next two years of completing my degree and happened to share this information with a coworker in the hospital. He said to me, ‘you work, go to school and still manage time to volunteer. Why don’t you do what you love.’ That’s when I decided that I really love caring for others and wanted to try nursing. Army nursing has exceeded my expectations. I never realized how many avenues and untraditional roles I could take. As a nurse you can never be in a rut. Nursing is always changing with the new technology and advancements; I have to change the way I think in order to stay current. As a member of the ICU team, I like to think that I take nursing to a higher level. I can really make a difference to patients and family members. Unfortunately for some patients, the ICU is their last stop. Then I have to focus my efforts towards the family. Nursing is always challenging me and it keeps pushing me to grow and learn.
