In college I majored in pre-med. During my junior year I realized that the role of a nurse was more what I was looking for. Nurses deal more directly with the patients, so I switched my major to nursing. Nursing school was hard, but I expected that. I worked in a hospital during school and that helped to train me for my career. Cardiac care is more than I thought it would be. My job is very intense and exciting. The patients that I care for are seriously ill and I am responsible for their health. I perform CPR, start IV lines, dress wounds, and monitor ventilation machines as well as a myriad of other tasks. As a senior nurse, I am a mentor for younger nurses. I have earned increasing levels of responsibilities over the years and today I coordinate patient discharge planning, deal with insurance billing issues and ensure that new doctors rotating through our unit are prepared for all the nuances of coronary care. I am most fulfilled when I am able to help a patient who initially enters my unit on a ventilator who is unresponsive. When I am able to care for them, be it a day, a week or a month, and then I see that same patient look up at me and say thank you, there is no other feeling like that in the world. I highly recommend nursing to anyone who is willing to help the sick. Now is a great time to become a nurse. The money is great and the opportunities are limitless. I am able to set my own schedule and the hospital administrators encourage me to go back for more education. I can set my work schedule around school. With my degree I can do anything and work anywhere.
