I was a patient myself and had both good and bad experiences with nurses. As a patient I was sick and at the mercy of the nurse. When nurses showed me kindness and treated me as a person, it affected me in a profound way. I was 23-years old at the time and working as a bank manager when I decided to become a nurse. Nursing is everything I expected and more. I am challenged every day and no two days are ever the same. People always wonder why I chose to specialize in oncology. While all patients need support, I believe oncology patients need me more because cancer affects the patient as well as their family. Both my grandfathers died of cancer so I have personal knowledge of how it impacts the family, therefore I am able to relate. Working in oncology is emotionally challenging. Patients are on an emotional roller coaster and I need to be there for them while I maintain my own stability. I am not worried at all about job security. With my nursing degree I can go anywhere in the world and have a job. I could leave today and have a job tomorrow. As a nurse, I have opportunities for advancement and increased education. There are many doors open to me. I can continue with patient care or I can move on to opportunities outside the hospital setting. It’s all up to me.
