Kathy V.

Raritan, NJ
RN, BS, MA; Senior Occupational Health Nurse

When I began my career in hospital nursing 28 years ago, my goal was to render the same professional care my brother received after a near fatal car accident. I was the advocate for the patient, answering questions about medical treatment. Whether lying in bed, sitting in a wheelchair or ambulatory, confident or afraid, alert or disoriented, each person was treated with respect and dignity. It was not an easy job, but it was a challenging one. 13 years ago, after working in public health/community health nursing, a new opportunity arose for me. I remembered my brief introduction to occupational health in college, but never dreamed it would be where I would find my niche! Occupational health has been the sum total of all my nursing and medical experiences. It entails a variety of roles, including clinical skills, emergency response, prevention of injuries and illnesses, business skills, interacting with all departments within the corporation, and managing disability and workers compensation. There is never a dull moment! I look back on the many patients and families I have worked with, and know I have treated them the way I want my disabled daughter and elderly parents to be treated by the medical profession. Has it been rewarding? Every day, every experience, and every patient have made me whole in both my professional and personal life.
