Nearly 30 years ago, I started my career in health care as an orderly at Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals. I soon worked my way into a position of ordering supplies for departments. That’s how I got the nickname, “Radar.” I could get things from anyone and anywhere. While working as an orderly, I began nursing school. I felt called to nursing, since I grew up with a nurse as a mother. After completing school, I went on to hold many positions at Providence, from an orderly and anesthesia tech to a clinical manager in the operating room (OR) and the outpatient surgery department. After working mostly in the OR, my own chest pains led me to outpatient surgery for a change of pace. The fast-paced nature of the OR left me, a people person, starved for quality time with patients. Spending quality time with families and patients is why I love being a nurse and being in outpatient surgery. I believe that success as a nurse requires you to genuinely care for your fellow man. You must be able to put yourself in another’s shoes to understand his or her needs. Treating others like you want to be treated is what nursing is all about.
