After graduating with a BSN, MSN, and a clinical psychiatric mental-health Post Masters certificate in nursing, I knew I wanted to continue my education towards earning a PhD and be involved in research, particularly health disparity research among minority populations. I aim to improve minority health through research and teaching. My dissertation research focuses on African American prostate cancer survivors’ cultural beliefs. There is a deficiency of African American male nurses who are doctorally prepared in the US, as well as young doctorally prepared nurses. I am a minority, in ethnicity, age, and gender, within the nursing profession. At the same time, health disparities primarily affect ethnic minorities, and there is a need for highly skilled doctorally prepared nurses who can bring forth cultural awareness to healthcare and educational settings to produce culturally proficient providers. I love the challenge, excitement, and variety within the profession of nursing. I encourage other minorities to seek education and training to become a part of the nursing profession, and earn an advanced degree. My career goals are to develop further as a nurse researcher and disseminate my research outcomes in order to help decrease health disparities among minorities and vulnerable populations.
