I was a young stay-at-home mother when I decided to go to
college to become a nurse. Five years later, I wanted to spend more time with my own
children as they were growing up. Because of the flexibility in
nursing, I was able to make changes in my career as my family life
changed, so I left the hospital setting to do home health visits on
neonates. This afforded me the opportunity to continue my rewarding
career in nursing and continue to take care of my family the way I
needed to. As my children grew older, I began to realize that my first love
in nursing was right back where I started - at the PICU at
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. So, five years after I left, I
went back to the same unit I had left. I am now an Assistant
Manager in the PICU, which allows me to continue doing the patient
care that I love and also have some influence in the careers of our
younger nurses. My goal would be for every young nurse to grow to
love this profession as much as I do. To find a profession that I love so much has been such an
incredible joy in my life. Its flexibility has afforded me the
opportunity to have a rewarding, interesting career, while being
the best mother that I could be. There is not a day that goes by
that I do not learn something new - whether it is a new diagnosis,
a new treatment, or something about my patient families or
myself.
After just one pediatric rotation, I found the profession that I
love. That was more than 18 years ago. Immediately after college, I
went to work at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit (PICU). I enjoyed the diversity of the unit,
which cares for every critical patient, whether it is a sick
24-week preemie, or a critical 18-year-old with lupus.
