Ship Island - Mrs. J. O. Jones Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Sponsor: United Daughters of the Confederacy

The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the oldest patriotic organization in the country because of its connection with two statewide organizations that came into existence as early as 1890 -- the Daughters of the Confederacy (DOC) in Missouri and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Tennessee. Membership is open to women no less than 16 years of age who are blood descendants, lineal or collateral, of men and women who served honorably in the Army, Navy, or Civil Service of the Confederate States of America. This award was established in 1979 from the Ship Island Memorial Fund in memory of Mrs. J.O. Jones of Gulfport, Mississippi, for her dedication to the Ship Island (Prisoner of War Camp) project. It will be awarded to a graduate student in the field of nursing who is also a descendant of a confederate soldier.
