I knew nursing would be demanding, but the rewards far outweigh any drawbacks because every day I wake up knowing I will help someone. I always wanted to be in a "helping" profession. As a nurse not only am I able to help people, but I am always in demand and my schedule is flexible. Nurses also enjoy extraordinary job security. Wherever there are people, there is a need for healthcare, so jobs are everywhere. Also, starting salaries are very attractive and there are always bonuses. While I was in nursing school I fell in love with psychiatric nursing. It is extremely challenging trying to meet the needs of psychiatric patients, and I like teaching the patients and their families about their illnesses and medications. They depend on me to calm their fears and I like knowing that I help put them at ease. It's very satisfying to know that I made a real difference in a patient's life.
