I chose nursing school because I knew I wanted to help people and make a difference every day. The nurse is always where the action is. They watch over the patient, advocate for them, discover changes in their condition, and rally the team. The nurse knows what is really going on with the patient, beyond their test results and vital signs, seeing the patient from every angle and understanding their true experience. During times of hardship, the nurse becomes part of the family.

I have worked in a number of specialties including cardiology, open heart surgery, and critical care. In each of these experiences I found myself in the role of precepting and mentoring students and new nurses. Through that I found my next love: Teaching. Now I teach baccalaureate nursing students in the clinical setting, while still picking up hospital shifts about once a week. This balance allows me to do everything I love and is incredibly rewarding. My students and patients teach and inspire me every day. Nursing has taught me about myself and about people in ways I’ve never imagined.
