Helping in Haiti

January 2012

Last year the Campaign for Nursing's Future partnered with the Urban Zen Foundation's Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT) Program to provide scholarships to four deserving nurses to teach them skills and techniques to help avoid the emotional and physical depletion of burnout.

As the two-year anniversary of the Haiti earthquake is remembered this month, we recognize the UZIT members who are currently treating caregivers, staff and pediatric patients at St. Damien Hospital in Haiti, a recent addition to the UZIT Program clinical rotation sites. Liz Lattuga, RN, one of the scholarship recipients, was able to join the UZIT members on a recent trip. During her time in the grief-stricken country she was reminded that care giving crosses all boundaries and speaks a universal language of compassion. "The Haitian people, and the people that are volunteers working down there, work so hard day in and day out with smiles on their faces," said Lattuga in a recent video blog.
