Minneapolis Community and Technical College

Midwest

The Nursing Department offers two academic tracks.

The Professional Nursing Program curriculum at MCTC is concept-based. Students entering this program are dually admitted, both to MCTC as well as to Augsburg College. Dual admission ensures seamless continuation through to baccalaureate work and beyond at Augsburg College. This approach allows students to learn connections between nursing concepts that support the arrival at correct conclusions through critical thought rather than memorization. Students who successfully complete the AS degree and graduate can continue on to complete the baccalaureate coursework at Augsburg College or choose to apply for admittance to other colleges and universities to earn a Baccalaureate Nursing Award (BS, BA, BSN, BAN). MCTC has articulation agreements with Metropolitan State University, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Consortium, and other private institutions. Graduates of the 64 credit AS Professional Nursing degree will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX- RN).

Students admitted to the practical nursing program will earn a Diploma in Practical Nursing (PN) upon successful completion of the two semester program. Classes are offered during day hours only. Students in this program will learn to collect data regarding physical and mental functioning, administer prescribed medications and treatments, monitor status and perform delegated nursing care of your patients, all under the supervision of a registered nurse. They will also learn to develop rapport with patients and to maintain medical confidentiality. Graduates of the program will then be eligible to apply to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam – (NCLEX-PN). Following licensure, graduates will be able to apply to mobility nursing programs if they wish to pursue a Professional Nursing (RN) credential.
