Working across many treatment settings, and with a strong emphasis on patient education and disease prevention, nurses bring their technical knowledge, innovation, creativity, and healing touch to bear every day to significantly improve patient health. As healthcare providers who typically spend the greatest amount of time with patients, nurses bring their innovation to patient care every day.
Nursing innovation is not new, but it is often overlooked and unrecognized. There are countless examples of significant nurse-led innovations over time that have saved lives and changed patient outcomes – Florence Nightingale, for example, who pioneered the concept of the importance of sterilization to prevent infection, or Sister Jean Ward, who discovered that sunlight could cure jaundice in newborns.
This year, Johnson & Johnson is celebrating National Nurses Week (May 6-12) by shining a spotlight on nurses who are changing the world and helping to make a difference in the lives of their patients through innovation.
In this special nursing innovation-focused issue of Notes for the Nursing Community, watch two inspirational video stories and get to know nurse innovators Elizabeth and Roxana who have found new ways to change lives. Learn how you can share these videos during National Nurses Week and help support nursing innovation through the Northeastern University School of Nursing innovation summits.
