It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It’s Nurse Tobin from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Since his first day on the job, Tobin Mathew, RN, BSN, has donned superhero apparel to help put a smile on his young patients’ faces. We recently spoke with Tobin, who was named one of the Red Cross 2017 Nurse Heroes, to learn more about the nurse behind the costume, and discuss his experiences working with pediatric patients.

November is National Diabetes Month, a time to bring attention and awareness to the millions of Americans living with diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year, and a 2017 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report suggests more than 100 million U.S. adults are living with diabetes or prediabetes. Helping to address the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S. are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE), who play a vital role in preventing and managing the prevalence of diabetes and often come from a nursing background.

Mary Yoshino, FNP, wore an identification badge for years that told the world who she was and what she represented in the healthcare community. When she retired from being a nurse, Mary wasn’t sure what her next step would be, but she knew she wanted to continue to help people. Currently, Mary is on the ground in Houston, Texas, volunteering in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, an extremely destructive Category 4 Atlantic hurricane that made landfall in southern Texas in August 2017. We recently had the opportunity to speak with her to learn more about her career and her current role as a volunteer disaster response nurse.

Tatu Msangi learned she was HIV-positive while pregnant, but with the help of the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) and the work of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatrics AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), Tatu had access to the care she needed. Now, Tatu works as a nurse at the same hospital where she received care, counseling HIV-positive pregnant women and mothers.
